Where We Work
DS3’s work is shaped by context rather than geography. We support partners in displacement, recovery, and climate-exposed settings where shelter and infrastructure must perform over time, adapt to changing conditions, and integrate with local capability. Rather than operating according to trends, funding cycles, or single-use models, DS3 focuses on systems that can be deployed responsibly, used for longer, and adjusted as needs evolve.
Our approach
DS3 works alongside communities, delivery partners, and authorities to support shelter and infrastructure responses that are practical, adaptable and appropriate to context. Rather than exporting fixed answers, we prioritise learning from use, refining designs through experience, and supporting responses that can evolve as conditions change.
Localisation as design
Localisation is not a slogan. It is a design decision. Where feasible, DS3 systems are designed to:- be manufactured or fabricated regionally
- be assembled and maintained locally
- work with locally available skills and materials
- support reuse and redeployment over time
Reducing dependency and waste
Many shelter solutions are designed for single use, even when displacement becomes prolonged. DS3 approaches shelter and infrastructure as assets to be stewarded, not consumables to be discarded. This supports:- longer usable life across deployments
- reduced repeat procurement
- lower material turnover and waste
- clearer visibility of lifecycle cost
Inclusion and protection
Shelter plays a critical role in safety, dignity, and daily life. DS3 designs systems with inclusion in mind from the outset, considering:- privacy and protection
- accessibility and usability across different abilities
- flexible layouts that support varied household and community needs
Climate and environmental realities
DS3 systems are designed for use in challenging environments, including:- heat, cold, and high humidity
- wind, flooding, and extreme weather
- prolonged exposure without specialist maintenance
Learning, pilots, and adaptation
DS3 develops and refines its systems through:- field testing and pilot deployments
- feedback from partners and users
- iterative design improvements informed by experience
Context before geography
DS3 supports partners across a range of displacement and recovery contexts in diverse environments. Our work is guided less by where we operate, and more by whether a given approach is appropriate to local conditions and longer-term needs.
