Sentinel+

Sentinel+

A modular hard-cover structure system for durable shelter and infrastructure in prolonged displacement and service delivery contexts.

Sentinel+ is designed for situations where lighter shelter solutions are no longer appropriate, and where greater durability, security, and environmental resilience are required.

Sentinel+ is intended for contexts where prefabricated or container-based shelter and infrastructure solutions are commonly used, but where long-term adaptability, repairability and cross-compatibility are required.

The system supports a wide range of uses across displacement, recovery, and operational settings — while retaining flexibility to adapt over time.

Intended use

Sentinel+ is commonly used for:
  • housing in prolonged or semi-stable displacement contexts
  • health facilities and clinics
  • WASH facilities, including toilets, showers, and hygiene blocks
  • communal kitchens and food preparation spaces
  • classrooms, training facilities, and learning hubs
  • operations, administration, and coordination centres
  • staff accommodation
  • shared and community facilities through the CommUnity Spaces approach

Configuration and layout

Sentinel+ is built around a shared structural system that allows units to be configured in multiple ways to suit site conditions and programme needs. Units can be deployed as:
  • standalone structures
  • linked rows for housing, kitchens, or administration
  • hub configurations for clinics, learning, or community services
  • corridor-connected layouts that protect movement and operations in all weather
Structures can be combined, extended, or reconfigured over time without demolition or material waste. Unlike fixed-layout units, Sentinel+ is designed around a shared structural and panel system, allowing components to be reused, reconfigured, and maintained across different functions over time.

Structural and climate performance

Sentinel+ uses a hard-panel wall and roof system designed for durability, security, and prolonged exposure. Key considerations include:
  • suitability for long-term outdoor use
  • options for on-ground or raised-floor installation, depending on flood risk, terrain, and site conditions
  • integrated anchoring and grounding systems to improve stability in high-wind, monsoonal, and severe-weather environments
These features support reliable use across a wide range of climates and contexts.

Localisation, logistics and waste reduction

Sentinel+ is designed to support responsible delivery and stewardship. Where feasible:
  • panels and components can be manufactured regionally to support local capacity
  • systems can be supplied as flat-packed kits to improve container efficiency
  • components are reusable, repairable, and replaceable rather than disposable
Deployment approaches from component kits to higher levels of pre-fabrication are selected in partnership with agencies and donors based on urgency, site conditions, and logistical constraints.

Services and power readiness

Sentinel+ structures are designed to integrate with essential services over time, including:
  • solar power and energy storage
  • lighting, ventilation, fans, and heating where appropriate
  • cooking, water, and sanitation systems
This supports coordinated site planning and reduces the need for multiple parallel infrastructure solutions.

Durability, stewardship and standards

Sentinel+ is intended for use beyond immediate emergency timelines. The system:
  • uses reusable, repairable and redeployable components
  • is designed to reduce lifecycle cost, waste, and repeated replacement
  • supports long-term stewardship of infrastructure assets
  • is designed to align with relevant UN SDGs and UNHCR shelter and infrastructure guidelines
